Research Notes on Multiple Sclerosis and Constipation
Constipation is one of the most common symptoms of multiple sclerosis.1 Multiple sclerosis can cause constipation by preventing the pelvic floor muscles to relax, which decreases your ability to have a bowel movement.2 Multiple sclerosis can also cause an interruption of signals sent to your brain signaling the need to have a bowel movement.2
Fast Facts:
- To possibly avoid constipation that results from multiple sclerosis, increase your fluid intake.2
- Also increasing your fiber intake may help to decrease your chance of experiencing MS-related constipation.2
- Up to 75% of people with multiple sclerosis will experience MS-related constipation.1
- MS-related constipation may also be a side effect of medications your health care provider has prescribed to treat other symptoms of multiple sclerosis.1
