Research Notes on Multiple Sclerosis Risk Factors
Certain factors may increase your risk of developing multiple sclerosis. People who grow up in a colder climate before the age of fifteen appear to be at high risk of this disease. Moving to a more tropical climate before fifteen, seems to lower the risk. Climate changes after that age do not seem to affect the risk of developing multiple sclerosis.1 Other risk factors include age, gender, being of northern European descent, and heredity.2
Fast Facts:
- While this disease may develop at any age, multiple sclerosis occurs between the ages of twenty and forty in about seventy percent of the cases.3
- Women are more likely to develop multiple sclerosis than men.2
- Certain autoimmune disorders such as thyroid disease, type 1 diabetes, and inflammatory bowel disease may increase the risk of multiple sclerosis.2
