Research Notes on Multiple Sclerosis Myths
There are a number of myths about multiple sclerosis. Those myths are usually based on the origin of the disease and its treatment. Most people mistakenly believe that multiple sclerosis is fatal.1 The truth is, most people with multiple sclerosis have a normal life expectancy.1 These myths can be quickly dispelled by reviewing information from credible sources.
Fast Facts:
- Another common myth about multiple sclerosis is that it is caused by a sexually transmitted disease. There is no scientific evidence to support this theory.2
- There is a common misconception that multiple sclerosis is contagious. You cannot contract multiple sclerosis by being exposed to someone with the disease.3
- Some people believe that multiple sclerosis is directly inherited. Although there are genetic factors that may increase your risk of having multiple sclerosis, there is no single "gene" that causes it.3
