Research Notes on Multiple Sclerosis Medications
Unfortunately, there is no cure for multiple sclerosis; however, a variety of drugs do exist to help treat the condition. Medications are available which act to modify the disease, manage the symptoms of the disease, and to manage relapses of the condition. Most medications used to treat multiple sclerosis are available by prescription only, and many patients require several different medications.1
Fast Facts:
- Disease modifying medications typically include interferon (Avonex, Betaseron, and Rebif) and glatiramer (Copaxone).2
- Many medications may be used to help treat multiple sclerosis symptoms, such as: methylphenidate (Ritalin), clonazepam (Klonopin), gabapentin (Neurontin), and terazosin (Hytrin).3
- Steroid medications are often used to manage relapses of multiple sclerosis. A few of the steroid medications sometimes prescribed to multiple sclerosis patients include prednisone and methylprednisolone.4
