Mosquito Bites

Research Notes on Mosquito Bites

Although most mosquito bites are usually just itchy and annoying, mosquitoes can carry diseases. In the United States, the likelihood of catching a serious disease from a mosquito is low. However, since there is a risk of disease, the best action is prevention of mosquito breeding grounds, such as standing water. Using a mosquito repellent is also advised.

Fast Facts:

  • Only female mosquitoes bite people.
  • Female mosquitoes must feed on blood to produce fertile eggs.
  • There are about 3000 species of mosquitoes that have been described world wide.
