Research Notes on Mood Stabilizers
Doctors generally prescribe mood stabilizers to control bipolar disorder. These medications may also be used short term to treat depression or mania. Some anticonvulsant medications (like Tegretol or Depakote) have mood stabilizing effects. Many times mood stabilizers are combined with a second or third medication for optimum treatment.1
Fast Facts:
- Lithium, Depakene/valproic acid, Topamax/topiramate, and Tegretol/carbamazepine are commonly prescribed mood stabilizers.2
- It is believed that omega-3 fatty acids have mood stabilizing effects.2
- Most mood stabilizers show their full effects only after a few weeks, so it is important to remain on your medication unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor.3
