Mood stabilizer medications are used to treat the symptoms of mood disorders such as bipolar disorder.1 Mood stabilizer medications work by helping to suppress mood swings between mania and depression.1 Lithium, carbamazepine, and valproic acid are some of the most common mood stabilizers prescribed by mental health professionals.2

- Nausea, drowsiness, and diarrhea are side effects that are common among mood stabilizer medications.2
- Mood stabilizer medications taken during pregnancy may increase the risk of your child being born with birth defects.2
- With the exception of lamotrigine and lithium, most mood stabilizers are not effective at treating depression.1
