Research Notes on Mood
Mood is the term used for an emotional state of mind. It can be a certain feeling at any given time, as in "What kind of mood is the boss in?" or it can be receptive and dependent on a particular thing, such as "I'm not in the mood to watch TV."1 Several parts of the brain affect mood: the limbic system and the cingulate.2 About 44 million Americans experience mood disorders. Also called mental disorders, they are among the most common conditions affecting health today.3
Fast Facts:
- Proper nutrition is important, and affects your mood.4
- What you drink is also important. Alcohol can deepen depression, and caffeine can increase anxiety and mood swings.4
- The two most common mood disorders are depression and bipolar disorder.3
- Our Burns Depression Inventory and Am I Bipolar? quizzes can assist you in evaluating your mood.
