Research Notes on Mononeuropathy
Mononeuropathy involves loss of movement or sensation that can be caused by damage to a single nerve or nerve group.1The "pins-and-needles" sensation that occurs when one's foot falls asleep, can be caused by a type of mononeuropathy, which can be resolved by simply moving to a different position. Treatment depends on the cause of the mononeuropathy.2
Fast Facts:
- Physical injury is the most common cause of mononeuropathy. Other causes include sitting in one position for too long, or poorly fitted casts or crutches. Also prolonged pressure on a nerve that runs near a prominent bone, as in the shoulder, knee, or wrist.3
- Mononeuropathy is uncommon in children, but it has been found in all age groups.4
- Some common forms of mononeuropathy include bells palsy, carpal tunnel syndrome, and sciatic nerve dysfunction.5
