Research Notes on Modafinil Side Effects
Headache, back pain, nausea, and nervousness are the most commonly reported side effects of modafinil. Not all patients will experience negative side effects when using a medication. However, some patients will experience serious adverse effects which should be reported to a physician right away. Should you experience unusual muscle spasms, hallucinations, hypertension, or signs of an allergic reaction, seek help at a local health care facility as soon as possible.1
Fast Facts:
- Other non-serious side effects associated with modafinil include: diarrhea, constipation, heartburn, loss of appetite, dry mouth, sweating, flushing, insomnia, gas, nosebleed, and excessive thirst.2
- Chest pain, depression, skin rash, and rapid heart rate are other side effects which should be reported to a physician right away.2
- Modifinil is a generic form of the brand name medication Provigil. Provigil is approved by the FDA to treat narcolepsy, but is sometimes used off label to treat fatigue in patients suffering from multiple sclerosis or Parkinson's disease.
