Research Notes on Modafinil Drug Interactions
Some antibiotics, MAOIs, and protease inhibitors can negatively interact with modafinil. While many medications can be safely used together, certain drugs can interact in a manner which results in an increased or decreased amount of medication in the blood. Patients should always inform both health care providers and pharmacists regarding any and all over-the-counter, herbal, vitamin, and prescription medications he or she may use while taking modafinil.1

- Other medications which can negatively interact with modafinil include: carbamazepine, clomipramine, cyclosporine, diazepam, itraconazole, ketoconazole, methylphenidate, birth control pills, hormonal contraception, phenobarbital, phenytoin, propranolol, rifampin, theophylline, and warfarin.2
- Modafinil is FDA approved in the treatment of narcolepsy. It is sometimes prescribed off-label in the treatment of fatigue related to multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease.2
- Modafinil is a generic medication that is sold under the brand name Provigil.2
