Research Notes on Modafinil
Modafinil is used to alleviate the symptoms of narcolepsy and obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome.1 Modafinil is a stimulant that works by helping you to stay awake during the day. Modafinil is not a cure, but will work as long as you are taking it as prescribed.1
Fast Facts:
- Modafinil has been shown to effective in treating depression symptoms and schizophrenia, but by law can only be marketed to treat sleep disorders.2
- Has also been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of shift work sleep disorder.
- Side effects include nausea, chest pain, insomnia, and dry mouth.2
- Modafinil is sold under the brand names Provigil and Alertec.
