Research Notes on Migraines in Teens
Migraines in teens are more common than you might think. Studies suggest that approximately ten percent of teenagers have migraine headaches, and they affect teen girls more often than teen boys.1 Studies have shown that the longer the teen has this condition the more difficult it will be to treat. Therefore it is important to get your teen diagnosed and start treatment early.2
Fast Facts:
- Migraine symptoms in teens often start off with pain that is on one side of the head, often throbbing, sometimes with auras, nausea, or vomiting.1
- Migraines are often triggered by certain foods, not enough sleep or too much, hormonal changes, temperature changes, or excessive consumption of caffeine.1
- Research suggests that suicide is higher among teens with migraines and that there is a higher risk for them to have psychiatric disorders.3
