Research Notes on Migraines in Men
Men that get migraine headaches are at a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Studies show that middle-aged men with migraines are 42 percent more likely to have a heart attack than those that do not have these types of headaches.1 It is suspected that the link may be an increase in factors that may cause blood clots, as well genetic factors that result in elevated homocysteine levels.2
Fast Facts:
- Men with migraines tend to have a slightly increased risk for having high blood pressure and higher cholesterol levels.1
- Migraine symptoms in men often include pain at the front of the head, or on one side, and nasal congestion.3
- When nasal congestion is present, men are often misdiagnosed as having sinus headaches.4
- Triggers that often cause a migraine include red wine, certain foods, fatigue, stress, temperature changes, and not enough or too much sleep.4
