Research Notes on Migraines in Children

Migraines are not uncommon in children, and usually appear as severe reoccurring headaches. The incidence of migraines in children has been reported to be as high as five percent, and they occur most often in adolescent girls.1 An early indicator that your child may develop migraines is if other family members also have these types of headaches.2

Fast Facts:

  • Common migraine symptoms in a child include pain around the eyes, at the front of his/her head, or in their temples, some times with auras.3
  • Migraines tend to increase in teenage girls due to hormonal changes, but boys may outgrow them.4
  • Home treatment for a migraine in a child is to have them lie down in a darkened room with a cool wet washcloth placed across their forehead.1
  • There are also several medications that your physcian may prescribe.1
