Research Notes on Migraines and Smoking
Smoking and second-hand smoke from smoking products can contribute to migraine headaches for both the smoker and the non-smoker. Nicotine in the tobacco stimulates the vascular activity in your brain, contributing to the pain of a headache. Smoking also reduces the effectiveness of treatments for migraines.1
Fast Facts:
- Removing the stimulus by quitting smoking or reducing your exposure to second-hand smoke is especially helpful in preventing a migraine.2
- Some smoking side effects such as high blood pressure, irritation of the nasal passages, and inflammation of the sinuses, can also contribute to headaches.1
- Allergies related to smoke as well as odor sensitivity can also cause migraine headaches for some people.3
