Research Notes on Migraines and Red Wine
Red wine is often a trigger for migraines.1 There are some experts that think the tannins in the wine are the main culprit behind the headaches. Tannins cause a serotonin deficiency, which constricts the blood vessels in the brain. This will reduce the blood flow to the brain and cause a migraine.2
Fast Facts:
- It is suspected that histamines, which are common in red wine, may be another culprit. Some people have an allergic reaction to histamines which can cause a headache.2
- It has been suggested that taking Sudafed before drinking red wine may possibly prevent a migraine.3
- Other triggers may include caffeine, exertion, other forms of alcohol, hormonal changes, and smoking.4
