Research Notes on Migraines and Allergies

People with allergic rhinitis appear more likely to have migraines, than do people without allergies.1 Allergic reactions cause the body to release histamines. This causes the blood vessels in the brain to dilate, worsening or causing a migraine headache.1 If nasal allergies are treated aggressively, migraine headaches improve.2

Fast Facts:

  • Steroid nasal sprays and allergy shots are frequently used to treat allergies that can cause migraines.2
  • Allergy-induced sinusitis and food allergies are also said to cause migraines.3
  • Studies have shown that about 75% of people suffering from migraines have at least five or more food allergies.4
