Research Notes on Migraines and Pregnancy
While pregnancy may bring new aches and pains, researchers believe that migraines may actually decrease during pregnancy. Although the cause of migraine headaches isn't known, scientists believe that estrogen may play a role, as more women suffer from migraines than men. While some women may still experience a migraine when pregnant, many report the symptoms are less severe.1
Fast Facts:
- It is recommended that all migraine sufferers, including pregnant women, keep a headache diary in an attempt to identify migraine triggers.2
- Before taking any medications to treat a migraine, be sure your physician is aware of your pregnancy as not all drugs are safe to the developing fetus.2
- Some safe ways to treat a migraine while pregnant include: applying a cold towel to your forehead, taking a cold shower, exercising, and practicing relaxation techniques such as yoga or meditation.2
