Research Notes on Migraine Treatment
Medications can be used to treat occurring migraines and to prevent future migraines. The pain of migraines can be eased by over-the-counter anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen or aspirin. Triptans are the most common prescription drugs for migraines, given to people who suffer from severe migraine attacks.1
Fast Facts:
- Triptans specifically target serotonin levels in the brain.1
- Mild narcotics, such as Fioricet, Fiorinal, or Tylenol with Codeine, can also help relieve migraine pain.1
- Preventative medications include high blood pressure medicines, antidepressants, and antiseizure medication.2
- Occasionally, antihistamines can be used to prevent migraines.2
- There are also non-drug treatments that can be tried at home.
