Research Notes on Migraine Diary
A migraine diary is an important tool for diagnosing and treating migraine headaches. Every time you have a migraine, write down the time of day, what you were doing, and any factors that may resulted in having a migraine. When you have finished recording in your diary, take it to the next appointment with your health care provider.1
Fast Facts:
- There are templates available to download online for a migraine diary.2
- Key factors to include in your diary include what you ate, what you were doing when the headache started, if there were any temperature changes, if you were traveling, sleep patterns, and if you are a woman the relationship to your menstrual cycle.1
- Migraine diaries may help identify triggers, which could help prevent a migraine by avoiding known triggers.2
- A diary will also help you keep track of the frequency and duration of your migraines; this may be beneficial in prescribing medications to prevent a migraine.3
