Research Notes on Migraine Complications
Complications from migraines are few and usually do not affect your overall health.1 However, there is the threat of complications due to excessive use of drugs used to treat your pain. These type of complications can include ulcers and gastric upsets.2 Also, certain types of migraine headaches such as hemiplegic migraines and basilar-type migraines can cause serious complications such as the patient losing consciousness or having symptoms similar to a stroke.3
Fast Facts:
- A hemiplegic migraine may leave you with temporary paralysis that can last for days.4
- Basilar-type migraines are migraines with aura, where the aura is localized to the brainstem.3
- Episodes of basilar-type migraines can cause temporary blindness, hearing problems, and dizziness.3
- A condition referred to a serotonin syndrome can occur when you combine migraine medications such as triptans and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.2
