Research Notes on Migraine Aura
An aura of a migraine is a warning sign of the coming headache. Usually this is a visual warning, for example flashes of light, zigzagging patterns, or blind spots that may appear in the visual field. An aura may manifest itself in other ways, for example as speech problems or as tingling and numbness sensations in other parts of the body.1
Fast Facts:
- About 15% of people who have migraines also have auras.2
- Numbness as an aura has reportedly occured in the face and hands.2
- On even rarer occasions, an aura may manifest itself in altered mental states.2
- Avoiding migraine triggers can help avoid both auras and migraines.1
