Research Notes on Mifepristone
Mifepristone is a synthetic steroid formulation that is used as an abortifacient during the first two months of pregnancy.1 It is also sometimes used as an emergency contraception or to treat endometriosis, brain tumors, and uterine fibroids or to induce labor.2 Common side effects include nausea and vomiting, diarrhea and headache.3
Fast Facts:
- During early clinical trials, mifepristone was known as RU-486, and is sold in the United States under the name Mifeprex.1
- Mifepristone is not effective in aborting ectopic pregnancies.4
- Avoid grapefruit juice while using this medication.5
