Middle-of-the-night insomnia (also called nocturnal awakenings, middle of the night awakenings, or MOTN) is insomnia characterized by waking up in the middle of the night. MOTN includes middle and late insomnia.1 Nearly one in every four people suffer from middle of the night awakenings.2 This type of insomnia has been associated with depression, chronic pain, sleep apnea, obesity, alcohol consumption, high blood pressure, gastroesophageal reflux disease, heart disease, menopause and bipolar disorder.3

Fast Facts:

  • Mood and anxiety disorders are a common cause of insomnia.4
  • Caffeinated foods and drinks should be avoided before bedtime.5
  • Older people have more difficulty staying asleep than younger adults.6
  • According to psychiatrists, treating the insomnia is very likely to improve the mood disorder, too.
