Research Notes on Michael Phelps and ADHD
Olympic gold medal swimmer Michael Phelps was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) at the age of nine.1 Phelps was given medication and had behavior modification for two years before his mother decided to try another form of treatment.2 Phelps' mother opted to use a tight regimen that included swimming and time management to control his ADHD symptoms.1

- More than four million children in the United States have ADHD.1
- Phelps' mother says that even today she can see the signs of ADHD in her son.2
- Phelps won eight gold medals at the 2000 Beijing Olympics.1
