Michael Jackson was diagnosed with vitiligo in 1986. Vitiligo is a skin disorder in which the melanocytes (cells that make pigment which colors the skin) are destroyed, leaving skin blotched with differing colors. When rumors circulated that Jackson was undergoing skin bleaching treatments, he appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show to publicly disclose his condition and debunk the rumors.1

Fast Facts:

  • Vitiligo is not life-threatening, but it can be very troubling to those suffering with the condition.2
  • Jackson is also rumored to have suffered from lupus, another autoimmune disorder.2
  • Friends of the fallen pop icon reveal that Jackson shared that he felt very self-conscious of the condition and was widely criticized as a hater of his own race before he revealed the condition he was suffering from.3
