Research Notes on Michael Jackson and Lung Disease

In December 2008, a British journalist researching an unauthorized biography on Michael Jackson revealed that the pop star was suffering from alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, which is a genetic condition that affects the lungs and liver. After these claims were made, Dr. Tohme Tohme (spokesman for Jackson) released a statement denying the health problems and saying the rumors were a "total fabrication". Halperin stood by his claims revealing Jackson also needed a lung transplant, was bleeding in the intestines, and was blind in his left eye.1

Fast Facts:

  • Jackson's autopsy did not reveal a lung disorder, although his family has requested a second one take place.2
  • Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency is a rare disorder, affecting around 1 in 5,000 to 1 in 10,000 people in the U.S.3
  • Alpha-1 causes destructive enzymes to reach the lungs where they chew up the delicate lung tissue. This destruction is known as emphysema.3
