Research Notes on Michael Jackson and Lidocaine

When the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office announced limited details regarding the cause of death for pop icon Michael Jackson, the drug lidocaine was found in his system. According to reports, lidocaine (Xylocaine) was administered in combination with propofol by Dr. Conrad Murray, Jackson's personal physician, in an attempt to help the singer sleep. Although lidocaine was found in his blood, the drug is not believed to have played a role in causing Jackson's death.1

Fast Facts:

  • It is reported that mixing propofol with lidocaine is a common practice among anesthesiologists to avoid irritating the veins.1
  • The coroner's report stated that Jackson died due to "acute propofol intoxication" which was exacerbated by a "benzodiazepine effect." Propfol and lorazepam were the main drugs responsible for causing Jackson's death which has been listed as a homicide.2
  • Jackson was pronounced dead at UCLA Medical Center on June 25, 2009.2
