Research Notes on Michael Jackson's Skin
Michael Jackson was diagnosed with the skin condition vitiligo in 1986.1 Vitiligo is a condition where the skin loses its pigment by the loss of melanin.2 The result is a lightening of the skin usually on the hands, face, legs, lips, and genitals.3 There were also some reports in 2009 that Michael Jackson had skin cancer but they could not be confirmed currently.
Fast Facts:
- There are two types of vitiligo, non-segmental which is usually symmetric over the body and segmental which stems from the spine roots and spreads rapidly.1
- Vitiligo is not curable but its progression can be slowed.2
- Sunless tanning creams can help conceal skin imperfections.4
