Research Notes on Michael Jackson CPR

On June 25, 2009, pop-star Michael Jackson suffered cardiac arrest in his Bel Air home. Jackson's personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray made attempts to perform CPR, and claims he was unable to find a working landline to immediately call 911. When paramedics arrived at the scene, they spent 42 minutes trying to resuscitate Jackson. From the home, he was then transported to UCLA Medical Center where doctors spent another hour trying to save Jackson.1

Fast Facts:

  • Murray claims to have performed CPR on Jackson for several minutes prior to leaving him to seek help.2
  • It has been questioned why Murray performed CPR with Jackson on the bed, rather than a flat hard surface.2
  • The survival rate for those stricken suddenly with cardiac arrest outside of the hospital is only about 5%.3
  • CPR is difficult, even medical professionals often fail to push hard enough for effective chest compressions.3
