Methamphetamine constricts blood vessels in the placenta, which results in decreased blood flow to the fetus resulting in reduced oxygen supply and nutritient supply. Methamphetamine causes elevated maternal blood pressure and heart rate, which may lead to premature delivery or spontaneous abortion.1
Fast Facts:
- Fetuses exposed to methamphetamine have been shown to have central nervous system abnormalities, cardiovascular system abnormalities, intestinal abnormalities, urogenital system abnormalities, and malformations of the extremities1
- Methamphetamine use during pregnancy could lead to placental abruption2
