Research Notes on Gout
Gout (also called metabolic arthritis) is a disease created by a build up of uric acid. In this condition, monosodium urate or uric acid crystals are deposited on the articular cartilage of joints, tendons and surrounding tissues due to elevated concentrations of uric acid in the blood stream. Fast Facts
- Gout usually affects only one or two joints at a time - most often the feet and ankles.
- The ball of the big toe is the most common site.
- Without treatment, the attack subsides in a week or so and when patients first develop gout, there may be intervals of many months or even years between attacks.
- Flare-ups of gout are also called acute gouty arthritis.
