Research Notes on Mesenteric Artery Ischemia
Mesenteric Ischemia is a medical condition in which inflammation and injury of the small intestine result from inadequate blood supply. Causes of the reduced blood flow can include changes in the systemic circulation (e.g. low blood pressure) or local factors, such as constriction of blood vessels or blood clot. - Mesenteric Artery Ischemia occurs more commonly after 60 years of age but can also happen at any time.1
- Patients with Mesenteric Artery Ischemia may manifest postprandial pain, typically starting 20-30 minutes after their last meal and may last up to 60-90 minutes. 2
- One or more of the three mesenteric arteries that supply the small and large intestines can be affected by the condition. These are the Celiac Trunk, Superior Mesenteric Artery (SMA), and the Inferior mesenteric artery (IMA). 3 4
