Mesalamine is an anti-inflammatory drug that is used to treat inflammatory bowel diseases such as crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. It works by blocking certain natural chemicals that may cause pain and swelling. It reduces inflammation and other symptoms. Common symptoms are: diarrhea, nausea, and cramps.

  • Also known by the brand names: Asacol, Ipocal, Lialda, Pentasa and Salofalk.
  • Is taken either by mouth or as a rectal suppository.
  • Is available only with your doctor's prescription.
