Research Notes on Mercury
Mercury is a chemical element used in thermometers, barometers, manometers, sphygmomanometers, float valves, and other scientific apparatuses.1 Mercury is one of five metals that are liquid at or near room temperature.1 Because mercury can be toxic many mercury thermometers and sphygmomanometers are being phased out in clinical environments.1 They are now using alcohol-filled, digital, or thermistor-based instruments.1 However it still remains in use in science and scientific research applications.1

- Mercury is also called quicksilver or hydrargyrum.1
- Mercury's symbol is Hg.1
- Mercury occurs in deposits throughout the world.1
- It is harmless in an insoluble form.1
- Exposure to some forms of mercury can cause erythism, irritability, excitability, excessive shyness, insomnia, fine tremors, muscular spasms, fatigue, loss of memory, vivid dreams, depression, liver failure, brain death, death, and more.1
