Research Notes on Mental Health Statistics
If you or a loved one has a mental disorder or you are using the internet to research mental disorders, you are not alone. An estimated one in four American adults suffers from a mental disorder.1 Nearly 21 million American adults have a mood disorder -- which includes major depression, bipolar disorder, and dysthymic disorder.1 Anxiety disorders -- which include panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and phobias -- affect approximately 40 million American adults.1
Fast Facts:
- In 2006, 22% of Americans used the internet to research depression, anxiety, stress, or other mental health issues.2
- In this same time period, 37% used the internet to look up prescription or over-the-counter drugs, and 49% researched diet, nutrition, vitamins, or nutritional supplements.2
- Women are more likely to be interested in specific diseases, treatments, diet, and mental health.2
- 80% of American internet users, or some 113 million adults, have searched for information on at least one health topic.2
