Menstrual pain, also known as menstrual cramps, occurs in the abdominal and pelvic area of a woman's body.1 Menstrual pain falls into two categories: primary dysmenorrhea and secondary dysmenorrhea.2 Primary dysmenorrhea is a form of menstrual pain that is considered normal.2 Secondary dysmenorrhea is an abnormal menstrual pain that may indicate a problem such as a disease or an abnormality of the uterus.2
