Research Notes on Menopause and Mood Swings in Women
Menopause is the natural ending of a woman's menstrual cycle. During this time, the ovaries stop producing both estrogen and progesterone. Menopause commonly occurs between the ages of 40 and 55 but symptoms may be present before actual menopause starts. Mood swings are a common symptom of menopause.1
Fast Facts:
- If you have previously suffered from premenstrual symptoms or had postpartum depression, it's possible that mood swings may affect you more than others.2
- Changes in estrogen levels can affect both mood and behavior.2
- Adding magnesium and calcium to your diet may help relieve mood swings.3
- A new exercise routine and relaxation techniques may also curb mood swings in some women.3
