Research Notes on Meningococcus
Meningococcus, also known as Neisseria Meningitidis, is a bacterium that gets into the blood stream and causes Meningococcemia. This bacterium is a known cause of Bacterial Meningitis, which is when the Meningococcus gets through the blood-brain barrier. Meningitis shows symptoms of fevers, headaches and stiffness in the neck, which can be confused for a bad cold or the flu. Meningococcus is most often found in infants, or adolescents who live in close quarters with others, since it can be spread by droplet aerosols or secretions (sneezing, sweating, kissing, or sharing a drink) from anyone who is infected.
