Research Notes on Meningitis
Meningitis is an infection that causes inflammation of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Children, adolescents, and those with a weak immune system are most at risk for this infection.1 Fast and early treatment of meningitis may prevent serious complications or in some cases, death.2
Fast Facts
- There are two main types of meningitis - bacterial meningitis and viral meningitis.1
- There are a number of strains of bacteria that may cause bacterial meningitis such as streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus), haemophilus influenzae (haemophilus), listeria monocytogenes (listeria), and neisseria meningitidis (meningococcus).3
- Viruses cause more cases of meningitis than bacteria. Enteroviruses cause around 90% of viral meningitis cases in the U.S.3
- Other infectious causes of meningitis include fungi, parasites tuberculosis, and syphilis.4
- Examples of non-infectious causes include medications (like NSAIDs) and carcinomatosis meningitis.4
