Research Notes on Men Lose 10 Years of Life to 3 Risk Factors


A thirty-eight year study recently released in the British Medical Journal revealed that men who smoke, have high blood pressure, and high cholesterol may lose ten to fifteen years in life expectancy. The Whitehall study was sponsored by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) and led by the University of Oxford. The research also concluded that with these risk factors, men were twice as likely to die from other causes besides heart and vascular disease.1

  • No women were involved in the study but researchers believe the results would be similar to the outcome of the men.2
  • The study included 18,863 men between the ages of 40 to 69.1
  • First examinations were performed between 1967 to 1970. During the 38 year period, 13,501 died and 4,811 had follow-up examinations in 1997.1
  • Smoking, heart disease, and high cholesterol are three key risk factors for heart disease.1
