Research Notes on Melena
Melena or melaena is a term which describes black "tarry" feces. It often indicates an injury or disorder in the digestive tract.1 The black color is caused by oxidation of the iron in hemoglobin during its passage through the ileum and colon.2
Fast Facts:
- The most common cause of melena is stomach ulcer or inflammation caused by ibuprofen, naproxen, or aspirin.1
- It can also be a sign of drug overdose if a patient is taking anticoagulants, such as warfarin.2
- It usually signifies bleeding from the upper gastrointestinal tract.1
