Research Notes on Melatonin and Sleep
Melatonin has shown to be effective in helping individuals fall asleep faster and sleep for longer periods of time when used in individuals with some sleep disorders. Studies do not indicate that melatonin use can result in a more restful sleep.1 Some researchers believe that children with autism may suffer from a lack of melatonin, resulting in sleep problems which plague up to 70% of autistic children.2
