Research Notes on Melanoma Treatment
Melanin is the pigment that gives skin its color. The most serious type of skin cancer, melanoma, develops in the melanin. Melanoma can also develop in the eyes and internal organs. Overall health, age and stage of the cancer all factors in to what treatment is best. Treatment options when melanoma has spread beyond the skin may include surgical removal, chemotherapy, radiation therapy or biological therapy.1
Fast Facts:
- Thin, early stage melanoma may be completely removed by doing a biopsy or simple excision (surgical removal).1
- Protecting skin and eyes from UV rays is the best way to prevent most cases of melanoma.1
- In the search for treatment, studies are being done on several melanoma treatments such as chemoimmunotherapy, gene therapy, targeted therapy and vaccine treatment.1
