Research Notes on Melanoma Statistics
Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that is ten times more common in Caucasions than African Americans.1 There are 17.7 new cases of melanoma reported each year for every 100,000 people living in the United States.2 Although it affects more men than women, it is the second most prevalent cancer (following breast cancer) in women between the ages of 25-29.3
Fast Facts:
- If treated before it spreads, the five year survival rate for melanoma patients is 99%.4
- Every 62 minutes, an American dies of melanoma.5
- It is one of the more common cancers in young Americans.1
