Research Notes on Megacolon
Megacolon, also referred to as Hirschsprung's disease, occurs when the colon becomes enlarged and is unable to move stool. A rectal exam or anorectal manometry test is typically performed in order to reliably detect megacolon. 1 Some common symptoms include abdominal pain, constipation, fever, and abdominal tenderness.2
Fast Facts:
- Megacolon may be caused by Parkinson's disease, Chagas disease, nerve damage, and the use of narcotics.1
- Surgery may be recommended to remove part of the colon which does not function properly.1
- Affects both men and women equally.3
