Research Notes on Mediterranean Diet
The Mediterranean Diet gained wide spread recognition in the 1990's and continues to grow in reference to dieting lifestyles. The root of the Mediterranean Diet evolved from the sixteen countries that border the Mediterranean Sea. The diet consists of consuming olive oil, fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts and seeds. Fish, red meat, eggs and dairy products are still consumed on the diet but with moderation. The diet is based on high fiber and good fats.

- Diet reduces the chance of heart disease and diabetes
- Wine is a staple on the diet in low to moderate consumption
- Created in 1945 by an American Doctor stationed in Salerno, Italy - Ancel Key
- Omega-3 is increased with the consumption of fish
- Diet is high in antioxidants
- Olive oil is known to increase HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol)
