Research Notes on Medicines for Migraines
There are two approaches with medicines that are available to treat migraines. One is to relieve the symptoms during a migraine headache and the second is to prevent the headache from occurring in the first place.1 Several prescription drugs, as well as over-the-counter medicines, are available to treat migraines.2
Fast Facts:
- Medicines used to prevent migraines are taken on a daily basis.1
- Common preventative medicines taken on a daily basis include verapamil, amitriptyline, Topamax, and even antihistamines.1
- Some medicines used to treat migraines as they happen include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), Zomig, Frova, dihydroergotamine, narcotics, and combination medications such as acetaminophen and codeine.3
- Studies have suggested that some migraine medicines that are over used, can actually make the migraines worse.4
