Research Notes on Meal Plans for Diabetes Management
Meal plan management is important when diagnosed with diabetes. The exchange meal, counting carbohydrates, and constant carbohydrates plans are three meal plans used to manage diabetes. It is important to consult with a health care provider or nutritionist to individualize a diet plan for optimal results.1
Fast Facts:
- The carbohydrate food plan is the most flexible meal plan and requires constant monitoring of glucose levels.2
- The constant carbohydrate food plan allows the individual to eat carbohydrates and balance each meal with the use of insulin.3
- An exchange meal plan involves planning a serving size amount for each food group. Starch, fruits, milk, fat, vegetables, and meats are the six food groups.4
